Check engine light on: what to do, and can you keep driving?
The amber engine symbol is the warning that causes most panic. In fact, how the light behaves tells you a great deal about how serious the problem is. Start with one question: is the light steady, or is it flashing?
A steady light: not an emergency, but not to be ignored
A steady check engine light means the car's computer has stored a fault. Usually this relates to emissions, a sensor or the fuel mixture. If the car is behaving normally — no power loss, noise or vibration — you can drive carefully and get to a workshop as soon as convenient.
But "I'll deal with it later" gets expensive: a minor sensor fault can damage the catalytic converter over time, raise fuel consumption and cause a roadworthiness test failure.
A flashing light: stop
A flashing light is a different matter. It usually means a misfire, with unburnt fuel passing into the exhaust. Continuing to drive can overheat the catalytic converter and destroy it permanently — one of the most expensive items on the car.
What to do: pull over somewhere safe, switch the engine off and do not push the car. It can be driven a short distance to a workshop; if you are unsure, call us on 0532 421 28 70 and we will assess it over the phone.
The causes we see most often
Among the cars that arrive with a check engine light, these are the most common findings:
- A loose or faulty fuel filler cap. It sounds trivial but it is very common. When the seal fails the system detects a leak and lights the lamp. The cheapest fix starts here.
- A failing lambda (oxygen) sensor. It measures the air-fuel mixture. When it fails, consumption rises and emissions go out of specification.
- Ignition coil or spark plug failure. Usually accompanied by misfiring and vibration; the most common cause of a flashing light.
- A dirty mass air flow (MAF) sensor. Causes rough idle and hesitation on acceleration. Cleaning is often enough.
- A blocked EGR valve. Frequent on diesels used mainly in town; carbon build-up jams the valve.
- Reduced catalytic converter efficiency. Usually the result of another fault being ignored for a long time.
- A blocked DPF (diesel particulate filter). On diesels driven only on short journeys the filter cannot clean itself.
- Wiring and connector problems. A significant share of apparent sensor faults are actually a corroded connector.
"I had the code cleared and the light went out" — is that a fix?
No. Clearing a code switches off the warning but does not remove the cause. If the fault is still there the light returns within days. Worse, clearing the code also erases the data about the conditions under which the fault occurred, making diagnosis harder.
We clear codes only after the fault has been repaired, then confirm on a road test that the light stays off.
Why replacing the part the scanner names is the wrong move
A fault code is a starting point, not a verdict. A code reading "oxygen sensor signal implausible" does not necessarily mean the sensor is bad — the wire to it may be broken, there may be an exhaust leak, or the engine may genuinely be running lean. Replace the sensor and the light comes back, with your money gone.
The correct method is to read the code and then confirm it against live data: what value is the sensor producing while the engine runs, and is it within the expected range? That check takes a few minutes and prevents unnecessary part replacement.
In short: when should you go to a workshop?
- Light flashing — stop now, do not push the car.
- Light steady, car behaving normally — get it checked within a few days.
- Light steady with power loss, noise or vibration — do not wait.
- Light went out by itself — still have it scanned; the record stays in the computer and the fault can return.
